It's Giving Showa

Retro Kissaten and Showa-Era Bars in Tokyo

The best Showa-era kissaten in Tokyo are the ones that never updated: Sabouru in Jinbocho (1955, log-house front, seven colors of cream soda), Kayaba Coffee in Yanaka (a 1930s wooden townhouse with tatami upstairs), and Cafe Bach near Minami-Senju (roasting its own beans since 1968). For late nights, Coffee Aristocrat Edinburgh in Shinjuku is open 24 hours, and 喫茶閃光 (Kissa Senkō) in Nishi-Ogikubo only opens at 6pm. Order a cream soda or nel-drip coffee, bring cash, and don't rush.

What is a kissaten, and why do the Showa ones feel different?

A kissaten is an old-style Japanese coffee shop. Showa means the era from 1926 to 1989, and the ones on this list were built then and mostly left alone: dark wood, velvet chairs, a siphon or a cloth filter, a menu with pudding, pizza toast, and napolitan pasta. Nobody is trying to be retro. It just never changed.

What should I order?

Cream soda (melon green is the classic, Sabouru does seven colors). Nel-drip or siphon coffee, which is slower and thicker than a pour-over. Pizza toast, napolitan pasta, a thick egg sandwich, and the firm pudding. Most places expect one order per person.

How do I not get it wrong?

  • Cash. Several of these don't take cards.
  • Smoking is still allowed in some (Edinburgh for one). Ask for non-smoking where it exists.
  • One drink each, minimum. Don't share one coffee across a table.
  • Keep your voice down. These rooms are small and half the people in them are reading.
